SEA ISLE CITY– On July 4th, countless families from across the nation made Sea Isle City their destination of choice for the 2010 Independence Day holiday weekend – and hundreds brought their children to the resort’s Annual Junior Olympics Program at Dealy Field, a free event sponsored by the City’s Recreation Department and hosted by the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City.
As thousands filed into the City’s main recreation complex on Independence Day morning, 125 yacht club volunteers “shepherded” the 560 young athletes between running, jumping and throwing stations, where the children competed by age group and gender. After the races, the fastest runners, strongest throwers and best jumpers were individually called to a nearby stage, where each were introduced to the crowd by the yacht club’s Commodore Ron Salerno, who placed gold, silver and bronze medals around their necks. As the winners stood atop a three-tiered victory platform on-stage, proud parents and grandparents flashed digital cameras, making memories that will no doubt last a lifetime.
According to Cheryl Castor of the Sea Isle City Recreation Department, 2010 was another banner year for the annual competition, which has been taking place for decades.
“Even with so many participants, everything went very smoothly – thanks to the volunteers from the yacht club,” said Castor. “We always hear good things from parents, who are happy that their children can participate in such a fun community event. In fact, many people tell us that they plan their vacations around the Junior Olympics Program – and many grandparents attend the event with their families because they want their grandchildren to have the same experience their children had years earlier. It’s a great way to celebrate our nation’s birth!”
