Like a wicked serve, the challenges confronting the Ocean City High School boy’s tennis program this spring are happening at a fast and furious rate. But it must be recognized that the Red Raiders approach each and every match with respect for the opposition and without fear.
Helping guide Ocean City on the court this season are the team captains Luke Bowman (senior, second singles) and Rich Flemming (senior, first doubles).
“These players were chosen based on their attitudes, effort, and leadership skills both on and off the court,’’ Ocean City head coach Tim Kelley said. “Both of these players have drastically improved the consistency in their game-play. Both Luke and Rich are led by example style individuals who also consistently provide positive energy and comments to their teammates.
“Luke has only been playing for two years so he has a tall task ahead of him in playing against kids who have been playing for a long time and for many of them, tennis is their primary focus. Rich has always been a solid doubles player and was First Team All-Cape Atlantic League (CAL) last year and had a combined doubles record of 16-4.’’
Flemming started playing competitively as a high school freshman.
“My dad had been a coach for 15 years and I did numerous camps and found a liking to the sport,’’ Flemming said. “I think one of my strengths as a player is my temper that can be used to my advantage to become more aggressive on the court.
“I would like to improve on my net play and overall focus on each specific point rather than the overall game count.’’
As in previous years, Flemming aims to have a strong team and individual record this season.
“The major positive influences in my career have always been the support from my parents,’’ Flemming said.
As coach Kelley mentioned, Bowman began competing just a few years ago, at the age of 16.
“My mom and dad both played and I felt it was a sport of longevity that I could stick with into old age,’’ Bowman said. “My athletic ability helps me cover the court and get to difficult shots. I would like to improve my strategy as in placement and positioning.’’
On a personal level, Bowman wants to become a better player and leader for his team.
“I would like to see my team make it to the (NJSIAA) South Jersey semifinals and have improvements all around to pave way for successful future seasons,’’ Bowman said. “My coach and assistant coach have been positive mentors along with my parents and grandparents who enjoy watching and showing support.’’
Ocean City has a home match scheduled versus Bridgeton on May 6.
