COURT HOUSE – The Middle Township High School football team earned their first win of the 2017 season a little sooner than expected on August 31. The Panthers edged Steinert High School of Hamilton, 32-31, in a historic Cape May County game. Typically, the regular season begins after Labor Day, but due to program changes in the West Jersey Football League, starting a week sooner was the only option for both teams.
The early game did not matter for Middle as they dominated the first quarter with touchdowns from Mack Selby and Karl Giulian. After the Spartans started their scoring campaign in the second quarter, Giulian scored another touchdown to give the Panthers the lead heading into halftime.
Steinert had a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to tie it up, but a touchdown by quarterback Cameron Hamer late in the game secured the win for the hosts.
This marked the team’s first season opener win since 2008. Middle will travel to Holy Spirit High School in Absecon on Friday night and will return home on September 22 to face Buena Regional.
