Middle Township High School Panthers broke a school record when Romeo Rodriguez won by forfeit.
Middle Township Wrestling finishes the season at 18-3 with the best winning percentage in school history. They are tied for the most wins in program history with 18 equaling last year’s total. Rodriguez is the new all-time Middle Township High School wins leader with 106 wins.
Rodriguez broke the 2018 record held by Gary James Nagle with his 105th win against Cinnaminson and then added his 106th against Audubon.
The District 31 Championships will take place Saturday Feb. 16 at Williamstown High School.
“However Romeo does in this tournament will determine his final number,” Coach Matt Wolf said. “He could wrestle all the way through to state championships.”
Rodriguez is one of the team captains.
“Everyone on the team worked really hard,” Wolf said. “It was a great day for our team, finishing 18-3, which is one of the best records in school history.”
Rodriguez did not wrestle prior to his freshman year.
“It’s really rare to have a kid who has not wrestled before high school, or from time to time growing up, to win matches as a freshman,” Wolf said. “He has really put in the work. The records he has had the last few years are nothing short of incredible.”
The wrestling program has followed Rodriquez, according to Wolf.
“The whole team is having a really great season,” Wolf said. “He has been the leader and he’s 35-1 right now. Everyone has raised their level with him. As any great player on a team does, he’s been a great example both on and off the mat.”
Rodriguez has been accepted to several colleges and will be wrestling next year.
