WILDWOOD CREST – Joe Maloy, 30, a Wildwood Crest native, will compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to a report in The Press of Atlantic City.
Maloy was the top U.S. finisher May 14 at ITU World Triathlon Yokohama in Japan, placing 11th overall in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 16 seconds. As the top-ranked competitor in the USA Triathlon Objective Rankings System, Maloy guaranteed his nomination to the U.S. men’s triathlon team, according to the report.
Maloy, a gradate of Wildwood Catholic High School, earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, swimming, track & field and tennis at the school, and set school records in the 3,200m and 5k, according to Maloy’s profile on Team USA website.
A parade was held in the Wildwoods in Maloy’s honor May 16. Fire and police vehicles led a procession around the island, and Maloy visited local schools, including those he attended, according to a report in The Press of Atlantic City.
