NORTH CAPE MAY – The Lower Township Kayaking Club held its 5th Annual Rally/Fun Race June 28 at Ferry Road. Twenty-seven contestants lined up their kayaks for a start time of 1 p.m. to paddle to the halfway marker at Harpoon Henry’s Restaurant and back. Club co-founder Mark Lovell, who organized the race, acted as emcee and awarded prizes to all winners. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary boat, captained by Bruce Long, was on-hand in case of emergency. Club member Jim Stevens facilitated competitors and had his boat ready to assist if needed.
Trophies and prizes went to David Barbara, Overall Winner, Ted Schnitzler, 1st Place Men, Anita Willbanks, 1st Place Women, Joanne & Bud Damminger, 1st Place Tandem, Cliff Gotwols, Andrew Wright, 1st Place under 18, 2nd Place Men, Mariann Rementer, 2nd Place Women, Doreen Gantz & Linda Blanchette, 2nd Place Tandem, Jessie Rynkiewicz, 2nd Place (18), Brian Skoda, 3rd Place Men, and Cathy Saverzoft, 3rd Place Women.

Councilman Jim Neville, a member of the kayak club, competed in the race and told the Herald “I’m looking forward to a nice race. We have a wonderful day and great group of people. I love that Mother Nature is smiling on us today.”
The Lower Township Kayaking Club welcomes new members club and invites everyone to visit its Facebook page. The club offers numerous salt and freshwater paddles throughout the year, and non-paddle events with no membership fee. T-shirts and decals are available to members and non-members for a nominal price.
