WILDWOOD CREST – Wildwood Crest native Joe Maloy made his Olympic debut Aug. 18 in the men’s triathlon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Maloy, 30, finished as the top American and 23rd overall with a time of 1 hour, 48 minutes, 30 seconds. Teammates Ben Kanute and Greg Billington finished 29th and 37th, respectively.
Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain defended his Olympic title by winning gold with a time of 1 hour, 45 minutes, 1 second. Brownlee’s younger brother Jonathon won the silver medal and Henri Schoeman of South Africa won the bronze.
The triathlon consisted of a 1.5 kilometer (0.93 miles) swim, 40 kilometer (24.8 miles) bike and 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) run. Maloy completed the swim in 33rd place and the bike in 40th place.
Maloy earned his spot on the United States Olympic team after finishing as the top American in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Yokohama in Japan on May 14. Since then, he has competed in other triathlons, such as Escape From Alcatraz in June and ITU Mixed Relay World Championships in July, and placed first in both.
Maloy began his athletic career a member of the Crest Dolphins club swim team. The 2004 Wildwood Catholic High School graduate earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, swimming, track and field, and tennis. He attended Division I Boston College and became a stand-out swimmer during his four years, and later became an assistant coach. He was a part of the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol from 2003-2008. Maloy became pro in triathlon racing in 2010. The Borough of Wildwood Crest, the Wildwood Crest Recreation Commission and the Wildwood Crest Running Club sponsored a ceremony honoring Maloy at Centennial Park after he qualified for the team earlier in the summer.
