COURT HOUSE – Six different try scorers and three different kickers helped tally 45 points for Jersey Cape Storm Sunday as Cape May County’s Under-19 rugby club shut out the visiting West New Castle (DE) Barbarians and extended its season record to 2-0.
Storm fullback Kyle Boyle fielded several tough kicks in swirling winds, scored two tries and kicked two conversions in a performance that earned the recent Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate Man of the Match honors.
Also touching down for Cape Storm were flyhalf Mike Angelucci (Ocean City High School), LCMR graduate Taylor Smith, prop Pat Hughes (LCMR), scrumhalf Ty Altieri (LCMR) and inside center Jonny DeHainaut (Cape May Technical High School). Angelucci also slotted one conversion kick and his replacement at flyhalf, LCMR junior Matt Nowakowski, added two more.
Outside center Ryan Clark (Middle Township High School) had an impressive first-side debut, breaking several big runs and playing solid defense all afternoon.
In the second match, a solid all-around performance earned first-year prop Dan Toledo (LCMR) Man of the Match honors in a tight 10-7 loss to West New Castle.
Nowakowski had the Storm’s lone try on the match, and then slotted the conversion kick himself to tally all of his side’s 7 points on the day.
Scrumhalf Darryl Davis (LCMR) and 8-man Adam Nugent (OCHS) continued to show promise as up-and-coming players, while inside center Rhett Kirchhoff had several strong touches in his best performance of the season.
The Storm is off Easter Sunday and has a bye the following week. Divisional play resumes Thursday, April 15 at South Jersey, in Cherry Hill.
