Hobie Cats Sail Offshore of Wildwood

By Jack Fichter

WILDWOOD – Despite somewhat choppy seas, the Wildwoods Classic Cup XXVI Hobie Cat Races got underway Sat., Aug. 14 and will resume Sun. Aug. 15 at 9:30 a.m. between Spencer and Schellenger avenues on the beach.
It is one of the East Coast’s last remaining ocean Hobie Cat Regattas.
Hobie Fleet 443’s home is Town Bank. Their Fleet grew from primarily a racing Fleet to a more social Fleet.
Its biggest activity for the year is organizing and running the Wildwood Classic Cup regatta in Wildwood.
In 1984 Will and Jack Morey approached Fleet 443 with an offer from Morey’s Piers to sponsor a regatta in Wildwood Crest. Will and Jack were uncertain, at that time, how to conduct the racing, and the Fleet was uncertain how to fund a regatta. So the partnership formed and the first Wildwood Classic Cup began in 1985.
