High School Scores: Winter Wrap-up

Swimming
Ocean City Girls (14-0)
The Ocean City girls swim team finished their record-breaking season with a perfect 14-0 record under new head coach Steve Warrington. For the first time in the history of the program, the Red Raiders brought home the NJSIAA Girls Public B state title in a close 86-84 win over top-seeded Chatham. The Red Raiders also earned their third consecutive South Jersey Public B Championship title this season by knocking off Moorestown in a 97-73 win. Stand-out swimmers include seniors Aly Chain and Amber Glenn, junior Amanda Nunan and sophomore Ryann Styer. Chain’s best event was the 100-yard butterfly, winning it three years in a row at the Hackney Invitational Swim Meet. Glenn had solo wins the 500-yard freestyle and competed in the team 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Nunan had success in 100- and 200-yard freestyle and in team events including the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Styer shined in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay. The Red Raiders will continue to be a team to watch next season.
Ocean City Boys (7-5)
The Ocean City boys saw their own line of success this season finishing with a 7-5 record. Five of their seven wins have been won by large margins. The Red Raiders made it all the way to the South Jersey Public B quarterfinals, falling to Gloucester Tech, 94.5-75.5. Seniors Tom Cusack, Mike Fiscus, and Billy Cundriff were key swimmers for the Red Raiders this season, especially in medley relays. Cusack had notable triumphs in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races. Fiscus earned wins the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Cundriff had success in the 50-yard freestyle.
Middle Township Girls (6-2)
The Middle Townships girls swim team finished their outstanding season with a 6-2 record. All of their wins were won by large margins. The team made it all the way to the South Jersey Public C semifinal round, falling to Haddonfield, 124-46. Sophomore Urvi Patel and juniors Abby Thompson and Khushbu Patel were just a few of the Panthers’ important swimmers. Urvi Patel broke a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke. Thompson saw success in the 100-yard freestyle. Khushbu Patel shined in the 100-yard butterfly, of which she earned a Cape-Atlantic League First Team All-Star recognition. Urvi Patel, Miranda Targum, Abby Thompson and Jenna Sittineri also earned C.A.L. First Team All-Star recognition in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Middle Township Boys (7-4)
The Middle Township boys finished their remarkable season with a 7-4 record. For the first time in their program history, they won their first playoff meet against rival Cape May Tech, 90-80. The Panthers went on to the South Jersey Public C quarterfinal round where they fell to Barnegat, 103-67. Seniors Zach Sykes and Elliot Dingler were critical members of the team, along with stand-out sophomore Sean Geary. Sykes had key wins in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle in the quarterfinal meet. Dingler competed in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke in the Cape-Atlantic League Individual Swim Championship, while earning a C.A.L. First Team All-Star title in the 100-yard butterfly. Geary had achievements in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and team relays. Zach Sykes, Zach Hurtado, Mike Illick and Sean Geary were all recognized as C.A.L. First Team All-Stars for their involvement in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Cape May Tech Boys (4-5-1)
The Cape May Tech boys swim team finished their season with a 4-5-1 record. Their only tied meet was against county rival Wildwood Catholic early in the season. The team made it to the first round of the South Jersey Public C playoffs, but fell 90-80 in a close meet against rival Middle Township. The Hawks were led by senior Riley Hofman and juniors Jack Gombar and Eddie Kane in many events. Hofman had his best meets competing in the individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Gombar had success in distance swimming, freestlye relays, and the 100-yard butterfly. Kane had wins in the 50- and 200-yard freestyles, along with freestyle relays and the 100-yard butterfly.
Cape May Tech Girls (4-4)
The Cape May Tech girls swim team finished at .500 with a 4-4 record under first-year head coach Chelsey Barber. The Hawks swam in the first round of the South Jersey Public C playoffs, falling to Gateway, 91-79. Seniors Jaclyn Gerhing, Maddy Maguire and Julia Johnson were noteworthy swimmers for the team. The 200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay were where Gerhing saw success. Maguire had her own success in the 50-yard freestyle, breaststroke and freestyle relays. Johnson prospered in the 100-yard freestyle and freestyle relays. Both female and male Hawks are losing 14 key swimmers to graduation this year.
Wildwood Catholic Coed (3-4-1)
The Wildwood Catholic coed swim team finished their season with a 3-4-1 record. The team tied county rival Cape May Tech early in the season. Senior Eric Sorensen was crucial for the Crusaders, as he was a qualifier in states for the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. He also earned a National First Team honor in Cape-Atlantic League for the 100-yard backstroke. Sorenson competed in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay with teammates Jackson Rodgers, Dan Moses and Sam Francis in the Cape-Atlantic League Swim Championships. The members earned a National First Team honor in the Cape-Atlantic League. Bridget Maxwell earned a National Second Team honor in her participation in the 100-yard butterfly.
Lower Cape May Coed (1-6)
The Lower Cape May coed swim team finished their season with a record of 1-6, winning their only meet on the road at Pleasantville. Junior Bobby Murphy was a key swimmer for the Caper Tigers earning victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. 
Wrestling
Ocean City (17-7)
The Red Raiders had an impressive season finishing with a 17-7 record, posting key wins against rivals Millville, Holy Spirit, Oakcrest and Woodstown. Significant wrestlers included Nick McCardell (113), David Levin (126), Jeremiah Johnson (152), Will Nickerson (160) and Maverick Pearson (195), all of which had success in the District 32 tournament. Levin, Johnson and Nickerson were the only contenders from the Red Raiders who made it into the Region 8 tournament.
Middle Township (6-15)
The Panthers finished their season with a 6-15 record. The team had success in matches against rivals Vineland, Cedar Creek, St. Joseph and Atlantic City. Rafael Rodriguez (106) and Isaac Lopez (195) earned Cape-Atlantic League Second Team All-Star honors. Romeo Rodriguez (113), Gary James Nagle (152) and Austin Cominsky (182) received Honorable Mentions from the Cape-Atlantic League.
Lower Cape May (4-16)
The Caper Tigers finished their season with a 4-16 record. The team earned wins against Middle Township, St. Joseph, Triton and Cedar Creek. Alex Pruszinski (113) and Mike Yorio (170) had their own share of individual success at the District 32 tournament. Pruszinski took third place in the 113 weight class. Yorio was the only Cape May County wrestler to win a 2016 District 32 title, winning in his 170 weight class. Both of the Caper Tigers moved on to the Region 8 tournament, but fell in the semifinal wrestlebacks.
