Hawk’s Successful Golf Season

From Left: Zach Johnson

Now that it’s complete, the results have been tallied and members of the Cape May County Tech High School golf program have had ample time for reflection, it’s fair to state that the Hawks were very successful this past season.
In fact, a loss to Holy Spirit on April 16 helped propel the Hawks toward higher achievement this spring.
“An early season loss to a league powerhouse by a mere two strokes gave us a wakeup call and confidence that we could play with anyone in our Conference,’’ Cape May County Tech head coach Jeff Sobrinski said.
“A victory over a tough Middle Township team near the end of the season showed our improvement. We had not beat Middle in over 10 years. In our final match of the season we knocked off an undefeated in Conference Holy Spirit team-certainly a great way to culminate the season. At (NJSIAA) Sectionals we placed third out of all South Jersey Group 1 schools.’’
Chris Porto and Scott Wiltshire were the team’s Most Valuable Players according to Sobrinski.
“Chris led because of his tenacity he always hung with the other team’s top players,’’ Sobrinski said. “We affectionately refer to him as ‘Porto the pit bull’ for his toughness. Scotty also hung with all the best players from the opposing teams and his likable personality has helped to encourage others on the team to play more and improve their games.
“Zach Johnson was our team’s most dedicated player, always communicating with the coach year round trying to improve his game. Our three senior captains Dominic Krajicek, Matt Rutherford and Gage Hicks were outstanding with their selfless attitudes. Always placing the team first over any individual goals, a great example to others.’’
Alyssa Hicks, Ruby Redmond and David Wurtz were among the most improved golfers on the roster this year according to coach Sobrinski.
“David shot many scores in the low 40s,’’ Sobrinski said. “Ruby was consistently shooting in the mid 40s, a steady performer, while Alyssa cracked the top six early in the season and because of her improved play never left the top six.’’
Coach Sobrinski mentioned just how much of a memorable season 2019 was for Cape May County Tech golf. Next year should provide some great memories for the Hawks as well.
“Our team set a couple of all time bests for CMT golf,’’ Sobrinski said. “Most victories, 17 including the CMC Championship passing the old mark of 15 wins by the 2009 team. Their overall dual match record of 15 wins and three losses was also a best eclipsing the mark of 13-3 set by the 2006 team.
“Including Joe Schuck and Emily Brown eight of our top 11 players return next year. This group has excelled because they have taken what fundamentals they have been taught by myself and assistant coach Lance Hammel and taken their games to a new level by working on their games in the off season. Many have found jobs at Union League National Golf Course. Many have joined courses as juniors near their homes.’’
Union League National has indeed helped the Hawks’ program in many ways.
“Union League National Golf Club has supported Junior Golf and this team,’’ Sobrnski said. “General Manager Jacob Hoffer has encouraged the team as well as Head Pro Doug Delaney who has supported the team for many years. Members and staff all encourage and show enthusiasm for the team.
“Finally, I would say that balance was this year’s team’s strength. One of our goals was to place all six players in the 40s which is a goal accomplished more than once in the season.’’
