RIO GRANDE – There were colorful, identified flying objects in the air March 10 after Middle Township officially opened the Disc Golf Course at Ockie Wisting Recration Area on Fulling Mill Road.
Mayor Michael Clark accompanied by Committeemen Timothy Donohue and Jeffrey DeVico, Recreation Director Robert Matthews and Jay Eppenbach, co-designer of the course, snipped a blue ribbon to open the course. The rambling 18-“hole” course is played with a variety of plastic discs, each with a different function, according to Eppenbach of North Cape May.
Members of the Cape May Disc Golf Association, some with carts to carry their discs, others toting them in sacks on the back, broke into groups shortly after the 8:45 a.m. ceremony. As in golf, the lowest score wins.

“We just like to promote the sport. It’s healthful, low impact and inexpensive to play,” said Eppenbach. He said there are about 10 dedicated players and about 400 followers of the club on Facebook.
