Highlights from the Spring 2018 season in Cape May County high school sports:
Middle Township Boys Tennis Wins S.J. Title
The Middle Township High School boys tennis team spent all season unbeaten and winning many of their matches 5-0 to eventually win the South Jersey Group I title on May 21.
The Panthers were led by singles players Max Gilbert, Rob Giulian and Teran Broadnax along with first doubles team players Brayden Carr and Tathya Modi and second doubles team of Nick Gibboni and Jack Poindexter. They suffered their only loss of the season in the Group I semifinal game. The Panthers finished their season at 23-1 overall.
Wildwood Catholic Softball Wins S.J. Title
The Wildwood Catholic High School softball team won their second straight South Jersey Non-Public B title on May 31.
The Lady Crusaders were led by juniors Emily Cimino and Mercedes Rivera, who each joined the 100 career hit club late this season, and underclassman Brianna Bailey, who helped the team seal victories throughout the season.
Wildwood Catholic finished their outstanding season at 21-8 overall and will return many starters next season.
Wildwood Catholic Track and Field Athletes Make Marks in States
Members of the Wildwood Catholic boys track and field team reached the podium multiple times this season.
Charles Fields earned medals in the events he competed in. His speed in the 100- and 200-meter dashes secured him first place medals in the county meet, C.A.L. meet and the Non-Public B meet. He made it to the state’s elite Meet of Champions where he placed second in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash. Charles ran with Caleb Fields, Rakim Coyle and Aiden Saul in the 4×100-meter relay in the group level where they finished first.
Coyle was another member of the team who made an impact in the long jump and triple jump events. He placed first in both events at the county and league levels, placed first in the long jump and second in the triple jump at the sectional stage and placed sixth in the long jump at the Meet of Champions.
Caleb Fields also collected medals in his events this season. He placed second the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump in the county meet and placed third in the long jump in the C.A.L. meet. He competed in the sectional meet and the Meet of Champions this season.
O.C. Boys, Girls Lacrosse
The Ocean City High School boys and girls lacrosse teams have been the Cape-Atlantic League’s top teams in the name of lacrosse for the past few seasons and this season was no different.
The Red Raider boys finished second in the league, going 9-1 and finished with an overall record of 16-5. The biggest win of the season came late with an overtime victory against St. Augustine Prep, who previously were unbeaten in C.A.L. play until their game with Ocean City. The Red Raiders earned the top seed in the group stage of the playoffs.
Marty Cattie was a leader for the team and scored his 100th career goal this season. Cattie is just the third player in the program who has reached the milestone.
On the girls’ side, the Red Raiders finished at the top of the league, going 11-0, and finishing at 17-2 overall. They also made an appearance in the S.J. Group III final this year.
Junior Danielle Donoghue and senior Shannon O’Reilly scored their 100th career goals this season.
O.C. Baseball’s Nunan Selected in M.L.B. Draft
The biggest story in baseball this season came at the end when Ocean City High School baseball player Dan Nunan was drafted in the twelfth round by the Los Angeles Angels in the Major League Baseball draft.
The left-handed pitcher was the 361st pick overall in the draft for the California-based team. Nunan was 5-0 during his senior season with the Red Raiders. He helped lead the team to a 16-5 overall record and to the state playoffs. He committed to playing Division I baseball at University of Delaware earlier this spring and now must decide between the major leagues and attending college.
O.C. Wins County Golf Championships
The Ocean City golf team won the second annual Cape May County High School Golf Championships on April 24. Senior Matt Blaker won the 2018 individual title with teammates Jack Sullivan and Isaac Royster placing second and third, respectively.
The biggest win of the season for the Red Raiders came when they beat St. Augustine Prep, 152-154, late in the season for the first time in school history. The team finished 14-2 overall.
