AVALON – The Avalon Historical Society announces the winners of the fourth annual W. Norman Mackey Memorial Clam Shell Tournament: Singles: first place Blake Mackey, second place Dennis O’Neill, Doubles: first place Bill Dorman and son Brad Dorman, second place Kurt Haley and Rob Broadwater. The games were played on the 30th street beach in Avalon on Aug. 10. Allan Mackey, son of W. Norman, learned to pitch shells from his father in the early 1940’s. Allan resides in Vermont and plans his vacation around the clamshell event bringing some of his family along. He would like to see others enjoy the sport. Cape May was represented with participants who returned for the fourth year competition. Chair and secretary of the Historical Society Rose Marie Chew hopes to see the revival of the tournament with participants 14 years and older enjoying a great classic game on the beach.
