Not just year after year, but indeed decade after decade the Cape Atlantic League (CAL) has produced numerous outstanding golf teams and standout individual golfers and 2019 is certainly no exception.
There are a number of student athletes playing on the local courses who are top notch competitors in the sport. One of the best golfers in the CAL over the past few years is Kolby Carter, currently a senior captain for the Lower Cape May Regional golf program.
Among his other accomplishments, Carter was named All-CAL as both a sophomore and junior. He is continuing his successful ways this spring.
“It wasn’t until high school that I started playing golf competitively,’’ Carter said. “I like that golf is an individual sport. Even though we are a team, I am constantly competing against myself and trying to get better.’’
Carter seems to have a positive approach to what can at times be a very frustrating athletic endeavor.
“Being able to keep a calm and level head is important, to take bad shots in stride and bounce back,’’ Carter said.
On both an individual and team-wide basis, Carter has certain goals that he’d like to see reached on the course this year.
“I would like to make the CAL Tournament as well as hopefully the NJSIAA State Tournament,’’ Carter said. “My four years here we’ve been very close to being CAL season champs and I think we can achieve that.’’
Carter is also a true competitor off the field as well. He is a member of the National Honors Society.
“He works at his game in the off season and strives to get better all of the time,’’ Head golf coach Jeff Wunder said. “Kolby is always helping his teammates with their swings. Kolby has been an outstanding player all four years in high school golf.’’
Coach Wunder has been a positive influence in Carter’s athletic career.
“My coach Jeff Wunder knows how to encourage me and has pushed me to be my best,’’ Carter said. “Another positive influence is my former coach, John Appleget, who taught me what I know today.’’
The Cape Atlantic League Tournament is scheduled for May 15 at the Shore Club in Cape May Court House. The NJSIAA Sectional Tournament is scheduled for locations across the state on May 13 and May 14.
