COURT HOUSE — The votes are in and counted and Cape May County has once again come out on top with six of the top 10 beaches in New Jersey. The results of the third annual ‘Top Ten Beaches in New Jersey’ poll conducted by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium/New Jersey Sea Grant were announced on May 27 at Sandy Hook.
The top winner was the Wildwoods with Ocean City coming in second. Rounding out the top three was Long Beach Island. The other four Cape May County beaches voted in the top 10 include Sea Isle City coming in as number five; Cape May was number six. Cape May Point came in as number nine and Avalon took the number 10 slot.
Since the New Jersey top ten beaches poll began in 2008, Cape May County has fared very well with more than 50 percent of the top 10 beaches each year located in Cape May County, said Diane Wieland, Cape May County director of Tourism. Each of our resort communities has great beaches and that is not by accident, she added.
The municipal governments from Ocean City to Cape May Point work all year to ensure our residents and visitors have clean, safe and nourished beaches. According to the department of Tourism’s latest research, 89 percent of our visitors come for the beaches and tourism in Cape May County is a $5.1 billion industry. An estimated 19 million visitors come to Cape May County each year to relax and play in the surf.
The Best Beaches contest announcement is timed to coincide with the NJ Marine Sciences Consortium/NJ Sea Grant State of the Shore Report. Jon Miller, a research assistant professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, reported that 2010 had a challenging year with multiple Nor’easters and a major snow event but the beaches are in good shape for the 2010. He attributes this to the mild winters in the past few years that left our 127 miles of beaches in good condition and able to withstand the harsh conditions.
This is great news for Cape May County and a testament to the hard work done in each municipality in the county to protect one of our best natural resources, said Freeholder Leonard Desiderio who oversees the Tourism Department. I congratulate all the winners and all thank each municipality for the commitment and investment they make to ensure our beaches are safe and open for our residents and visitors.
