The June 23-24 Cape Express Beach Blast Sand Soccer tournament will be a decidedly international affair this year as the Cape Express Soccer Club and Morey’s Piers will play host to the U12 Dutch side Leudal United at the annual soccer mega event held on the beaches of Wildwood.
The Dutch youth team hails from the municipality of Leudal in the southeastern corner of the Netherlands. Leudal is located on the Meuse River and is home to about 36,000 people. The team is primarily sponsored by Vekoma Rides Manufacturing, which is based in Vlodrop, Netherlands. Vekoma manufactured and installed Morey’s Piers’ now iconic Great Nor’easter roller coaster in 1995. The Great Nor’easter sits on Morey’s Surfside Pier on 26th Avenue and has been a staple of the Wildwood beach skyline since its construction. In February 2016 Vekoma also handled the $4 million refurbishment of the Nor’easter, which replaced 90 percent of the ride’s track.
Before the June 23-24 weekend tournament begins, the Dutch side will also take on the U12 Cape Express team in an international friendly. The friendly is scheduled for Friday, June 22nd at Bill Henfey Park, 7th Avenue in North Wildwood. The match will kick off at 7:00 PM and is an open event, free for anyone to come and watch.
For many of the Dutch children and their accompanying parents, this will be their first time in the United States. Besides participating in the friendly and the tournament, the team will also spend some time in New York City and visit Hershey Park in Pennsylvania.
