ABSECON – The Seagull Classic Basketball Tournament returned to South Jersey for the first time since 1990 with a few local teams competing at Holy Spirit High School on Jan. 6 and 7.
On opening day, the Lower Cape May boys took on rival Wildwood and won, 71-56. Freshman Martin Anguelov led the Caper Tigers with a game-high 23 points while teammates Zach Cerasi and Pat Holden added 20 and 16 points, respectively. For the Warriors, Kyion Flanders led with 20 points while Tyler Tomlin and Donny Rexhepi added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Middle Township fell closely to powerful St. Augustine Prep, 55-49. Mack Selby led the Panthers with 17 points with Jalen Freeman and Coley Holton each adding 10 points apiece.
On the second day of the tournament, the Ocean City girls continued their unbeaten streak by winning 42-35 over Lenape. Danielle Donoghue led the Red Raiders with 13 points and Michaela Baker added 11 points. Emma Finnegan grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.
The Wildwood Catholic boys also remain undefeated with a 56-51 win over Lenape. Caleb Fields led the game with 26 points for the Crusaders with Taj Thweatt adding 13 points.
The Middle Township girls saw success at the tournament with a 38-35 win over host Holy Spirit. Kira Sides led all scorers with 22 points with Kate Herlihy adding 10 points for the Panthers.
