WILDWOOD — Make no bones about it, pooches and their people can become a part of Wildwood history. Pets and their owners are invited to join city officials June 14 as Wildwood cuts a ribbon to officially open its newly designated dog-friendly beach. The event will take place on the beach at Poplar Avenue at noon.
Dogs, along with their owners, will now be able to enjoy a fun-filled day at the beach, said Commissioner Pete Byron.
City Commissioners passed an ordinance on May 14 designating an area of Wildwood’s beach as dog-friendly. Since then, tails have been wagging as dogs made their way across the Boardwalk and onto the sand and into the ocean.
Under the terms of the ordinance dogs must be licensed, must always be leashed and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their four-legged friends.
“This is just another way that the city is thinking forward in terms of the beach,” said Byron who oversees the city’s Department of Revenue and Finance. “This is a huge boost for the city and for tourism. By bringing this dog beach to the city, we’re optimistic that local businesses will see increases in revenue as dog owners choose Wildwood as their vacation destination.”
