Use Leash on Beach for Dog Safety

Lulu died after eating something on a North Cape May Beach April 15. Shore Animal Control asks pet owners to follow leash laws and watch what pets are putting in their mouths.

NORTH CAPE MAY – Lulu, a 2-year-old dog described as “healthy,” died after eating something on a North Cape May beach April 15, according to a release.
Shore Animal Control says Lulu played on the beach from 4 to 5:30 p.m., then vomited and collapsed into a coma-like state. Lulu died five hours later after being treated at Ocean View Veterinary Hospital within 30 minutes of vomiting. She did not go swimming in the water.
Later, Shore Animal Control posted on their Facebook page that one of their officers “investigated the beach to see if there was anything suspicious, but nothing was found. The vet hospital said nothing was conclusive, but the dog did ingest something. There was ANOTHER dog on the beach with Lulu that was fine. They played together the entire time. It is very mysterious.”
Shore Animal Control advises pet owners to “never allow your pet to run loose, follow the leash laws and NOT allow them to eat ANYTHING foreign as it could be toxic.”
