COURT HOUSE – A new birth is exciting news for any family and that goes for the Cape May County Park and Zoo family as well.
Cape May County Freeholder E. Marie Hayes proudly announced Sept. 11 that the Cape May County Zoo has a new addition; a baby bison!
The male bison calf arrived Sept. 10 and is doing very well, according to the Zoo Veterinarians.
The new calf joins the zoo’s bison herd which includes his parents, 6-year-old Dam, Henrietta, and 6-year old-Sire, Hank and his sister ‘Snap’ who was born at the zoo Aug. 29, 2013 along with ‘Toby’ an unrelated 20-year-old female. Both Henrietta and Hank came to the Cape May County Zoo from Six Flags Great Adventure in 2010. The proud parents are happy to show off both of their offspring and visitors can view them in the North American Prairie exhibit at the Cape May County Zoo.
Bison are one of the most important animals in the history of the United States. Once numbering in the tens of millions, American Bison were almost driven to extinction by American pioneers in the late 1800’s. Conservation efforts by zoos have brought the bison population back from the brink of extinction. While we may never see the great herds of American Bison like our forefathers did, the modern day population is stable.
The Cape May County Zoo is open seven days a week and still on the summer schedule with hours from 10 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.
