COURT HOUSE –– The county Health Department is preparing to conduct an airdrop of rabies vaccine baits to target raccoons in uninhabited areas throughout the mainland communities of the county.
The vaccine-laden baits consist of an orally active, rabies vaccine, enclosed in a paraffin container and inserted into a processed fish meal cylinder about one inch by one inch in size.
The program will begin Sept. 24 and continue through Oct. 12. A total of 45,600 baits will be distributed.
Health Department representative Denise Versage told residents of Middle Township at a Board of Health meeting Sept. 17 not to worry about the baiting program.
“The baits will have warning labels and are extremely low in toxicity,” she explained.
Versage suggested residents with questions about the program call the Health Department at 463-6413.
