Pneumonia Likely Claimed Dolphin

By Jim McCarty

NORTH CAPE MAY – According to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, the deceased male Bottlenose dolphin that washed up May 22 on the beach at Englewood Street in North Cape May had been dead for at least a couple of days.
Center Director Robert Schoelkopf stated that the animal was 78 inches long and weighed 173.5 pounds.
Although the final results of a necropsy being conducted by the state are not yet available, the preliminary examination indicated that the animal had suffered from pneumonia some time before its death, although it cannot be determined if that disease was the actual cause of death.
There was no sign of trauma to the carcass according to Schoelkopf.
