OCEAN CITY – Four months of suspense will come to a Howling Halt on Sun., Oct. 30 when Ocean City’s Dog of the Year or “Pooch of Perfection” is named. The ceremony is set for noon on the Sun Deck by the pool of the Port O’ Call, 15th and Boardwalk.
Actually a better surname would be “The Most Plush Pooch” as the winner is determined by money votes raised from the public and donations by its family and neighborhood admirers. All funds benefit the Ocean City Dog Park, 45th St. and Haven Ave., a glorious haven and communal spot for area canines.
The Dog of the Year announcement will be followed by a “Howling for Hounds Best Dressed Contest” at approximately 12:30 p.m. Last year’s entrants were dressed as lifeguards, army personnel, a pumpkin and get-ups the defied description. You had to be there.
The contest is open to all doggies who feel comfortable in outlandish attire. Dog Park Committee members will be selling calendars with photos of the Dog of the Year entrants, T Shirts similarly illustrated and there will be a silent auction.
Photos and biographies of Dog of the Year contestants are available at www.oceancitydogpark.org. Some of the descriptions are interesting. For instance, a miniature Dachshund named Buster is touted as “…a loveable beach wiener that would make a perfect canine ambassador… Move over cool dogs… a hotdog is movin’ in.”
Another entrant, Crazy Sadie, claims to have entered the contest on her own. She says, “I am a very smart dog. My mom and Dad don’t know that I have entered this contest… When they drive me over the 9th Street Bridge I can’t contain myself and go crazy. That’s why they call me Crazy Sadie. I am loyal, smart and got you to believe that I wrote this letter.” Actually Sadie, some of us had doubts.
And so it goes, puff piece after ruff piece.
The public is invited to attend this canine extravaganza and bring along their best friends.
In the event of rain, events will be held in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.
