National Night Out Went Out for the Dogs

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Animal Advisory Board members greeted attendees at Middle Township’s National Night Out with “doggie bags” of information on different health and preventative measures for various animals like dogs, cats, horse, and chickens like leaving pets in hot cars, pet first aid, emergency kits for dogs, what to do in an emergency and heart worm prevention.
Vilma Pombo, Jen Modica and Rick Eufrasio reinforced the necessity to provide shade, water and adequate shelter to any pet outside in the heat for even fifteen minutes. Pet caregivers should be certain that shade and cool fresh water is available to their pet all day. Shelter should be available in case of rain or wind, but shelters do not provide protection from high temperatures. Dog houses can quickly reach over 100 degrees on a sunny day. Shade is the key.
If possible pets should be moved to an air conditioned environment when temperatures are above 85 degrees. They should not be exercised or walked in the heat and especially not on hot pavement or sand with nothing to protect their paws.
Everyone should have a plan for emergencies. Where can you go with your pet? Who can take over, if you are not there? What items should be in a pet emergency kit?
In addition, residents were told of a third rabies clinic to be held on September 27 at 2:00 PM at the Public Works Building on Mechanic Street. Spay/neuter options were shared.
It was a beautiful evening and everyone who stopped appreciated the information and doggie treats. Many were eager to volunteer on various board projects. Anyone interested in information or who wishes to volunteer can send an email to dstimmel@middletownship.com or call (609) 465-8732.
