CAPE MAY – A Great white shark was spotted by fishermen at 28-Mile Wreck, the site where a World War II shipwreck sits off of Cape May around 5:00 p.m. June 21, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia.
Fisherman Steve Clark of Avalon and crew of the 35 foot boat, 35 Everglades, noticed the 16 foot shark swimming around their boat. The shark circled the boat for about 20 minutes before devouring a bucket of chum that had been hanging off the side of the boat. The crew caught the encounter on video, shown above.
Such a Great white shark sighting is not that uncommon this time of year, Clark told NBC 10. He says he usually sees one great white shark every year and is able to differentiate between sharks due to the Great white’s teeth.
Clark and his crew work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to tag sharks in the Atlantic off the New Jersey coast as part of a cooperative initiative called the Apex Predator Program.
