Fund Set up For Emaciated Dog, Eight Pups

By Herald Staff

WOODBINE — Beacon Animal Rescue of Upper Township is accepting donations for a Woodbine dog and her eight pups that were found emaciated and close to death.
State SPCA inspectors are to check today on the condition of other animals at the property.
The dogs were relinquished to the Cape May County Animal Shelter Alliance on Aug.16, by their owner, Frank Cruz.
The dogs were transported to Shore Veterinarians for evaluation and tests for diseases before being transported to Beacon Animal Rescue¹s shelter on Butter Road.
On Aug. 13, the state SPCA was tipped off by a local resident about emaciated and underfed animals at the Cruz property in Woodbine .
Sgt. Jane Donohue of the state SPCA found conditions “horrible and appalling at the home where over 20 animals were living in need of food and medical attention,” according to a release.
The SPCA officer, felt sorry for. Cruz because of health issues, decided not to cite him on numerous violations, but instead to give a warning provided he relinquish the mother dog and puppies to the shelter.
The Cape May County Animal Shelter Alliance held a free cat spay and neuter clinic on Aug. 12 at the Woodbine Firehouse that was open to all residents of Woodbine.
Cruz went to the clinic and said he needed help with some of his animals. A
local resident contacted the SPCA after visiting the property and saw
the living and medical conditions of the animals.
The state SPCA will return Aug. 20 to see if Cruz will relinquish several of the other dogs in need of medical attention and treatment.
The cats inside the house have yet to be assessed as a warrant must be obtained before entering the property.
The mother dog was named Ginger because Cruz, although the owner, had never named her.
Ginger and her pups are recovering and gaining strength through the efforts of this rescue operations.
For anyone that would like to donate to the Beacon Ginger Fund, call 609 390-7946.
Funds are available for Woodbine residents to spay and neuter their animals for $10 by calling ( cats) 465 6388 or ( dogs) 628-4553.
Stray and feral cats can be done free also for Woodbine
residents.
