SEA ISLE CITY – In recent days, there have been false reports of a coyote on Sea Isle City’s beaches.
Officials from Shore Animal Control, the company that services Sea Isle City, have identified them as foxes – not coyotes.
According to a city release, the fox is part of the local eco-system and a natural inhabitant of New Jersey’s barrier islands. The fox is a member of the canine family and poses much less of a threat to humans than does a coyote, (similar to an average dog); therefore there is no cause for public alarm, the release noted.
Shore Animal Control believes that the foxes spotted on city beaches and dunes to be a mother and her pup. Because foxes are believed to have mange (a skin disease found among canines), traps have been set to capture the mother and her pup to transfer them to an animal rehabilitation facility, where the mange will be treated. Until the foxes are successfully captured, Shore Animal Control will continue to check traps regularly and track the foxes.
In the meantime, the public is reminded to stay off the dunes and stay away from any traps. Additionally, the public is reminded not to feed the foxes or any wildlife. Feeding foxes will make it more difficult for Shore Animal Control to capture them and render aid.
Local fox sightings can be reported to Sea Isle City Police Department at 263-4311.
Cape May County – Why don't we have a local TV station in South Jersey? We had channel 40 in Linwood and that's gone. Maybe because it highlighted real news at times!! With all due respect to the Cape May…
