Fish Line Played Role in Whale’s Death

Dead Whale

By Other News Source

SEA ISLE CITY – Officials say a dead humpback whale that washed ashore near 20th Street in Sea Isle City Sept. 16 died due to human interaction, 6ABC reports.
A necropsy completed by Marine Mammal Stranding Center Sept. 17 showed scarring on the 20-ton, 33-foot whale’s body which they believe was caused by it being caught in fishing line. According to the report, the whale had a small amount of food in its stomach and was emaciated, and likely wasn’t able to eat due to its injury, leading to its death.
Bob Schoelkopf, Marine Mammal Stranding Center’s founding director, told 6ABC the whale had been hit by a ship after it died.
Officials believe the whale was in the water for several days before washing ashore.
The whale was buried following the necropsy, the report continued.
