Cape May to Allow Dogs on Promenade During Winter Months

CAPE MAY — If your dog has always wanted to walk on the Promenade here, particularly past the Fudge Kitchen, beginning next month, Fido, Snoopy or Sheba may get their wish.
At an Oct. 19 meeting, City Council introduced an ordinance that would allow dogs to walk on the Promenade and beach from November through March, any time of day. Dog owners are must clean up after their pets.
“The owner or caretaker shall carry a dog waste disposal device. Any owner or caretaker of a dog who permits such dog to leave animal waste on the Boardwalk, Promenade, beach without disposing of same shall be subject to the penalties…”
Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman asked that some additional language being added to the ordinance that included cleaning up dog waste on the “beach, boardwalk, Promenade and environs.”
Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet in length. The ordinance states dogs are not allowed on the Washington Street Mall.
Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. said the ordinance should be named in honor of Councilwoman Deanna Fiocca who introduced the measure.
