SEAVILLE – The Cora May Animal Adoption Center located inside Shore Veterinary Hospital in Seaville New Jersey recently rescued a white terrier mix named Rocket. Rocket had lived his entire short life of 2 years on a heavy chain and was infested with fleas and parasites when he was rescued. The Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center called Dr. Nick Holland at the adoption center , because the county facility was overflowing with dogs and needed to find a temporary home for him.
Rocket was treated at the veterinary hospital and neutered with the help from the Animal Alliance and has now recovered from the parasite infestations. Because he was chained for most of his life, he was not leash or house trained, but the dedicated staff at the hospital has spent weeks working with him on training issues. He is now a wonderful dog, ready for adoption and would make a great family pet. Dr. Holland adds” Our staff has been wonderful spending hours of their own time working with Rocket to help him find a forever home. He is now great on the leash and is house trained. If I didn’t have 4 dogs of my own, I would certainly take him myself.”
The Cora May Adoption Center has been open since 2009 and is a cooperative effort between Shore Veterinary Hospital and Beacon Animal Rescue. The idea behind the Upper Township adoption center was to help alleviate the overflow of animals at both the county facility and Beacon Animal Rescue. The county shelter often is filled with animals, which makes taking new ones in a strain on the system. If is the small rescues and operations like the Cora May Adoption Center which helps save animals from being euthanized for lack of space. The Adoption Center was named after Dr. Nick Holland’s mother who was a dog lover. Dr. Holland continues. “ My mother loved dogs and cats so much and was so happy when I chose to become a veterinarian. After she passed, I thought this would be a fitting tribute for her kindness to animals.”
Animal welfare advocate Linda Gentille, of Upper Township was contacted by residents about some animals that were living outside in deplorable conditions. She contacted authorities who took action and were able to secure the release of Rocket. Gentille states, “Rocket had a difficult start in life to say the least. He is lucky to have people that cared enough to call the officials when they saw he was suffering. Not all dogs are that lucky. Thanks to the many people involved in this rescue and to Shore for taking him and providing the care he needed.”
Many dogs like Rocket that are outdoor chained dogs do not receive regular veterinary care. They often are victims of neglect and have heart worm disease as well as parasite infections which can be fatal. Dr. Holland continues” Rocket was found in time for us to treat him for parasite infestation. One of his siblings was not so lucky. What is unfortunate is that many outdoor dogs die from lack of veterinary care from either heart worm or parasite infestation, which is often a horrible death. Regular veterinary care for outdoor dogs would save so many.”
Rocket is available for adoption at the Cora May Adoption Center. Please call 609-390 9113 for more information on adoption fees and application requirements. Rocket is good with kids and other dogs.
