COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County 4-H Spring Equine Health Clinic will be held March 22, 2014. On this date, veterinarians and clinic volunteers travel throughout the county to farms and boarding stables, offering vaccinations to horses at a reduced fee. The clinic is open to all horse and pony owners in Cape May County.
These semi-annual equine health clinics, held each December and March, are cooperative endeavors between local veterinarians from South Jersey Equine Associates and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program. They are coordinated under the direction of 4-H Volunteer Nancy Rothenbiller.
“Volunteers are the heart of the 4-H Youth Development Program,” explains Acting 4-H Agent Linda Horner. “We are fortunate that long time volunteers like Nancy and caring veterinarians like the ones at South Jersey Equine Associates step up to provide this important service to county residents.”
Dr. Robert Newman, lead clinic veterinarian, encourages owners to take advantage of this opportunity to properly vaccinate their horses. The Coggins blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia will also be available. A negative Coggins test is required at most equine events and for equine travel throughout New Jersey and across state lines. Horner also reminds 4-H members that a West Nile Virus vaccination is now required annually by the NJ 4-H Horse Program.
The deadline for registration is March 14, 2014. Please contact Rutgers Cooperative Extension, at 465-5115, ext. 605, for a registration packet if you are not on our mailing list.
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K-13, on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
For additional information, contact Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, at 465-5115, Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
