Inviting the Outsiders In . . . Finding Real Art in the Antique Shops

By Arthur Schwerdt

This column has often encouraged people to search out the antique shops for interesting wall art. In the past we have looked at black and white prints, sporting art, colorful botanical and costume prints (fashion and military). Also in our “No More Bare Walls” crusade to help folks find affordable ways to fill their wall space and enhance their interiors.
This time we turn to the real stuff – oil paintings, watercolors, pen and ink and pencil drawings, and prints that have been pencil-signed by the artist. This kind of art from listed artists can be very pricey, but there are plenty of beautiful pieces by outsider or fringe artists that very affordable.
Most writers, poets, actors, composers and musicians never make it big time. The same is true of artists. There re many that toil in the field, but few who become listed artists. These include commercial artist, amateurs, regional, and itinerate artists.
Antique shops are heavy with this kind of art work and some of it is truly wonderful. If you haven’t in the past, start noticing the artwork in antique shops. Very soon you’ll be shopping for it there. I’ve created a little photo essay of some of the things you’ll find. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I shut up so you can learn more from the pictures.
