Nowadays it seems that everyone is into the latest trend of buying American-made goods.
But how do we generate more items that are made here in the USA? Here’s a suggestion: let’s start making them ourselves!
Need a new throw pillow or sham for your bedroom? Make it yourself.
Want to do a makeover on your old jeans, or make a simple throw for your sofa? You can do this. If you don’t know how to do it, take a class.
Dollard Baker Sew & Vac in Marmora offers a variety of classes, and if you don’t see something that strikes your fancy, you can arrange for an affordable private lesson with one of our sewing professionals.
Most likely you have an old sewing machine tucked away in a closet, attic, basement or garage (or maybe even a self-storage unit!).
Go dig it out, bring it to your local sew ‘n vac place, such as Dollard Baker Sew & Vac, and have them give the machine their “spa” treatment.
Remember the old adage, “take care of your equipment, and your equipment will take care of you?” Think of your sewing machine as your “equipment” and give it a little TLC. It will reward you with smooth sailing (or sewing, as the case may be).
Even if you haven’t used your machine for a while, it doesn’t hurt to have it looked over and have it cleaned and oiled. After a while the oil gets thick and sticky inside the machine (especially if it’s been in an attic, basement or garage), and it will work much better if the gears can work more easily.
Not sure what the problem is with your sewing machine? Bring it in for a free adjustment on the first Wednesday of each month, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Dollard Baker. What have you got to lose on this deal?
How do we get back into finding things that are made in the USA? We can start by making them ourselves. Small steps can lead to big goals, even if they are done one stitch at a time.
