Time to Rethink Carpet!

Article by Ginger Foglio
I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but carpet often takes a back seat to hard surface materials. I have always enjoyed the comfortable feeling you experience when walking, sitting or lounging on a nice carpet. It gives your room warmth and cuts down on the echoes; it creates a cozy feeling in my home.
There are several reasons why I like carpet:
1. Noise Reduction. In today’s world, everyone has electronics. Big screen televisions, speakerphones, computers and sound systems (surround sound!). All of these items plus everyday noises make our homes pretty noisy. Carpeting absorbs many of these sounds, especially when it is installed over a good carpet cushion.
2. Safety Carpet is good for all who live under your roof – children, seniors and pets can find great traction and soft landings. Bruised knees and skidding into the wall are minimized by simply choosing carpet.
3. Insulation Carpet acts like an insulator in your home. It holds onto the heat and keeps your energy bills down.
4. Luxury. If you stay in a hotel, can you ever recall a time where your room was a hard surface and not a carpet? (Maybe in the Caribbean.) Hard surfaces are usually found in the common areas and bathrooms. There are many patterns, styles and colors that you can choose from to reflect the mood you want to portray while personalizing your space. A carpet can just lay there and not interfere with other patterns in the room, or it can be the focal point of your space and receive all of the attention as it unifies your room and ties everything together.
5. Durability. If you properly clean and maintain your carpet, it will be a very durable investment and a beautiful part of your home for many years.
6. Easy Care. Many stains and spots can be treated without fuss. Getting to the spots right away is key. With the new fibers used in constructing carpets today, spills and stains are much easier to care for and eliminate. Vacuuming is definitely key in day to day activities when it comes to care, maintenance and durability.
7. Warmth & Softness. These two elements are often considered when purchasing a carpet. As one woman said, “No kid wants to curl up on a hardwood floor to play with toys!” However, children love sitting on a soft and warm carpet and they will comfortably play for hours. Today’s patterns and styles allow you to have any look you desire while providing your family with the comfort you seek.
8. Open Space. We all used to choose different colors for each room in the house, however, things have changed. Now we are looking for our spaces to be open and accessible to each other. This allows us to be together; we often don’t get a lot of time for that with all of the activities on our calendars. When you want a space to be open and inviting, running the same color throughout will help your space flow and appear more spacious.
9. Price. Whenever you are buying any kind of flooring, price is always a concern. Carpet is usually the most affordable. The entry-level price for carpeting, cushion and installation is significantly less than most hardwood floors. There are different price levels in any flooring that you choose, but in most cases carpeting is still the least expensive. It is wise to always obtain the final cost including installation, cushion, prep and finishing touches before you finalize your purchase.
If hardwood is still your dream floor but you want some of the benefits of carpeting, you can always use area rugs.
