There is a fundamental difference between natural stone pavers and man-made, manufactured pavers. That difference is time.
Natural stone exemplifies its durability simply by being. It can withstand any wind, rain and snow that our environment throws at it. There is no need to reassure you that natural stone can withstand the elements, because it already has!
Natural stone goes through life cycles, just like the stuff you learned about in freshmen year science class. The older the stone is, the better.
You can have this impressive, timeless stone as a part of your backyard, as your patio, pool surround or the siding of your home. Natural stone is formed millions of years ago in places such as Europe and the Middle East.
Creating the most unique structures that still stand today, natural stone such as travertine and granite are not only magnificent but they are durable as well. The breathtaking view of the Parthenon in Greece is one tribute to the glory of natural stone.
Manufactured Stone or cultured stone is not created through millions of years of development, rather it is made from concrete aggregate, cement, pumice (volcanic rock) and iron oxide pigments and then placed in latex molds.
Just like any imitation product, the quality can be inconsistent depending on the manufacturer. The stone may be dyed all the way through or just on the surface of the stone and if it chips the whole stone must be replaced. Natural stone may chip as well, but instead of being an eye sore, it may be consistent with the natural movement of the stone.
Another noteworthy drawback is Efflorescence. Efflorescence is a light powdery substance that may occur with cement based products and is usually the result of moisture migration through the masonry substrate.
Your stone will have the appearance of a milky film covering. If you are still considering imitation stone, please check the warranty.
