Summer is almost officially here. It’s time to get outside! The first day of summer is officially June 20, however, we notice summer in more subtle ways long before its official day – sunshine, warmer weather and increased traffic, yes, but also just by listening. The birds chirping to one another in the trees, seagulls soaring along the beach, frogs in the summer night and children’s laughter as they run along the beach and boardwalk. Ah… summer.
Of course, we don’t enjoy all the sounds of summer. The distinctive sound of buzzing insects around us isn’t a pleasant one, and we know those bugs are there to mess with our summer fun. Below is a checklist to see if it’s time to replace your screens, so you can keep the pesky bugs at a minimum this summer:
• Check your windows, doors and porch screens for holes, rips or tears – the obvious reason to replace your screens.
Less noticeable indicators:
• Check for sagging screen fabric in your windows, doors and porches – over time, the sun breaks down the screen fabric and you will notice movement, sagging or a billowing of your screens. This means the screen has weakened and lost its original composition.
• Check your windows, doors and porch screens for visibility – aluminum screen will oxidize over time and the fiberglass screen will become discolored. Both will distort your view through your windows, doors and porches.
• Check your screen frame for your windows, doors and porches – look for a proper fit so there aren’t any gaps, and check that the frame is not bent (sliders especially) so that bugs cannot get in. Also, the salt air is corrosive. Check frames for corrosion, blistering or pitting.
