The Knitting Club — How and Why to Join

By Press Release

When I tell my friends and acquaintances that I own a yarn shop, they look at me skeptically and say, “Oh, I think my mom (or friend, aunt, etc.) knits.”
Unless they are a knitter themselves. Then we have a wonderful conversation about what we’re knitting currently, in the past, and have plans for. Instantly I have a new friend that understands my passion for creating with beautiful colors and soothing fibers.
Since I’ve been knitting from age 12 (self-taught), I wondered what the perspective on “knitting” is, from a new and younger knitter. I conducted a phone interview with Becky Katity, who began knitting just a few short weeks ago.
Becky was urged to start knitting for several years now by her husband’s mother, Margie, but didn’t really have the inclination or the “knitting bug.” But recently, due to a job change, Becky became a stay at home mom with a little more time on her hands and a need to get Christmas gifts on a budget.
She and Margie came up with the easiest of patterns: a scarf (see Becky’s scarf pattern at end of article). I guess Margie and I should have warned her, because she started knitting, and knitting, went on to another scarf, found more yarn in a color and fiber she liked, and now just loves her new hobby.
Becky says her next project could be a hat or hand warmers, and she is itching to try a new Glitter-y yarn. She also told me she knits mostly at night, that knitting relaxes her, and keeps her hands busy and away from “munchies.”
Welcome to the Club, Becky!
We knitters really love our hobby and always have something to show for it: a one-of-a-kind hand knit sweater; gifts for our family; wonderful scarves, mittens, hats, socks and lots more. Just like the fashion industry, there is always a new yarn to knit with and plan a project with.
If you’re looking to make really special Christmas gifts, Fiber Arts has the yarn and patterns to get you started. We specialize in all skill levels from advanced to beginner, knitters or crocheters.
We offer instruction with purchase, classes, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We’re open seven days a week. See our display ad for information on hours and classes.
Here is Becky’s scarf pattern for beginners: With #15 needles and one Ball Mega yarn in your choice of color; cast on 15 stitches, and knit every row till you have 30 inches of yarn remaining. Bind off.
It’s that easy! Please stop in at Fiber Arts and we’ll show you how to you can join our “Knitting Club.”
