Cape May Court House – Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will host the free Virtual workshop, “Growing Small Fruits in the Home Garden,” via Webex on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 10 a.m.
The virtual program, part of the Garden & Grow workshop series, will be hosted by Jen Sawyer, ANR County Program Associate for Commercial Agriculture, RCE of Cape May County. The presenter will be Dr. Gary C. Pavlis, Atlantic County Agriculture Agent. Participants will learn about growing strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and grapes, proper planting and pruning techniques, about pest and disease control, and the best varieties to grow in Cape May County.
Pavlis said, “Especially now when we are spending more time at home, gardening is a productive and relaxing way to pass the time and in the end, you have fresh fruits and vegetables to enjoy for your efforts.”
Dr. Pavlis, has been a professor and agricultural agent at Rutgers University for 33 years. His areas of expertise are blueberry and grape/wine production. His blueberry newsletter, ‘The Blueberry Bulletin’, has an international following. His research on blueberry fertilization has transformed the New Jersey industry. He has been instrumental in the expansion of the New Jersey wine industry. Dr. Pavlis writes a wine article in edible jersey called Liquid Assets, regularly appears in print, on the radio and television educating the public on the intricacies of growing blueberries and grapes in New Jersey or touting the benefits of eating blueberries and drinking wine.
The goal of the Garden & Grow workshop series is to teach locals how to improve or expand their home gardens in new ways. This presentation was originally scheduled to take place at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County on March 25th, however, due to COVID-19, Rutgers Cooperative Extension is not providing in-person programming but instead is providing virtual programming to meet the needs of the community.
