Public Service Announcement from Cape May Environmental Commission

By Press Release

1. As you begin fall plantings, avoid invasive species!
2. If you provide bird houses and bird feeders, place those in areas within your yard – your neighbors may not want the dropped seeds in their gardens.
3. As you complete fall lawn treatments, try to keep the treatment on the lawn and off sidewalks. Remember, what you put on your lawn also gets absorbed into the water table, and from sidewalks and driveways gets washed into the closest water source (ocean, bay, lake, pond). Be sure the chemicals you use are safe for local flora and fauna.
4. Keep sidewalks clear of vines and overhanging trees so pedestrians can walk by unobstructed.
5. Rake leaves into gardens to use as mulch – this helps plants, butterflies and other insects. Sycamore and oak leaves don’t make good mulch, but other leaves do!
