While the warm temperatures and sounds of summer are upon us, so are the pests of summer, mosquitoes and ticks! Mosquitos can spread serious viruses and diseases, which can leave you very sick. Protecting your skin against insects is important to do, whether you’re on the beach, relaxing on a porch or enjoying a picnic at the park.
Keeping mosquitos outside of your home is essential. If you plan to open any windows or doors, thoroughly examine the screens to see if there are any holes that bugs can slip through. It is also pertinent to check the gaps around air conditioner window units, to see if there are open spaces.
Mosquitos are attracted to water, so it’s important to identify any standing water near your home, like gutters, ponds, standing water on pool covers and bird baths. If you have a pond, there are fish which eat mosquitos that you can place in your pound. Alternatively, there is a natural bacterium which can kill mosquito larvae but is safe for humans and pets. Citronella candles are a great additional repellent to keep mosquitos away.
Using mosquito repellent is a significant way to keep the mosquitos off your body. DEET is the most effective type of repellent. Opting for natural repellent is an option that does not involve chemicals. Try oil of lemon eucalyptus, found in a few natural repellents.
Dressing appropriately to avoid pests is another way to keep them at bay. Wearing light colored clothing is another way to repel mosquitos, as the pests are attracted to darker colors. Opting for long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks to cover your skin can help protect yourself from mosquitos and tick bites.
When spending time outside, it’s imperative to check your body for ticks when returning inside. Especially if you’re walking around grassy and wooded areas. Ticks can bite both humans and pets – protecting your pets from ticks is important. Contact your veterinarian before using any tick prevention products on your animals.
