Make Sure You Have Clearance

By Sponsored Content

When designing a kitchen island, bear in mind that the walkway space between the island and adjacent base cabinets must be 42 inches wide.
If you intend to incorporate a dining counter into the island, plan on having 60 inches of space between the wall and dining counter.
Remember that the higher an island dining counter is, the less overhang it needs (because diners’ knees bend less on tall stools).
While a standard countertop 36 inches from the floor should extend out 15 inches from the counter, a counter that is 42 inches from the floor only needs the counter to extend outward 12 inches. The distance between the countertop and the seat remains the same — 12 inches.
Kitchen islands improve function and efficiency in the kitchen by adding valuable work space. But they can do so much more.
Outfitted with a sink, a cooktop, warming drawers, refrigerator drawers, or even a dishwasher an island makes food preparation and cleanup much more convenient and often more social.
At Quality Home Center we specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, countertops, cabinets, gas fireplaces, paneling, flooring, doors and more. We are open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We accept MasterCard, Visa and Discover.
Here’s a hint: For two-cook kitchens or universal design, plan for a 48-inch clearance all the way around a kitchen island.
