This week, Habitat for Humanity welcomed Thrivent Financial to join them in their first joint Building on Faith Week Sept. 16-23, 2017. The three different construction and non-construction events held in Cape May County were a part of a broader effort that included 14 communities throughout the northeast, and thousands of hours donated by volunteers who put generosity into action. “Thrivent continues to be an incredible partner of Habitat Cape May,” said Shawn Lockyear, Executive Director. “They are invested in the communities they serve and continue to help build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”
The local Building on Faith Week kicked off with “Build Shelter Day” on Sept. 16, when over 20 volunteers worked alongside the Garcia Santiago family on the construction of their new home at 209 Reeves St. in Whitesboro, Middle Township. On Sept. 17, more than 30 kids young and old gathered at the Habitat ReStore in Cape May Court House for “Share Your Blessings Day,” and decorated wood framing studs with blessings, messages and artwork in support of the next Habitat family. These studs will be used in next Habitat home scheduled to start construction in spring 2018.
This Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Building on Faith Week in Cape May County will culminate in “Build Community at the ReStore Day,” where another 25 volunteers from the local church congregations will serve as greeters, cashiers and customer service staff for the first ever store-wide sale at the new ReStore in Cape May Court House. Habitat ReStores take donated furniture, appliances, building materials, fixtures, décor and more, and turn them into funding for local Habitat construction programs. The public is invited to visit the ReStore and join in this special Building on Faith Week celebration, where even the purchase of a sofa, sink, washer or lamp can help improve the place we all call home.
