CAPE MAY – This April (14 and 21) noted local naturalist, author and wildlife gardener Pat Sutton will lead a series of content-filled backyard gardening workshops. Come out to the Nature Center of Cape May April 14 for Pat’s Landscape Design Workshop (10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) and learn how to design a plan for you own property which integrates the key elements of a wildlife garden including food, nectar producing plants, water and cover. Return to the Center the following Saturday morning, April 21, (10:30 – Noon) to hear Pat’s presentation about the amazing migration of the Monarch Butterfly and learn how to attract Monarchs and aid in their survival as a species. Later that same day (1:00 to 3:00) Pat will share proven strategies for attracting the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, and be entertained by a blizzard of hummingbirds for the next five months.

April 28 is also the perfect time to share your garden success by “swapping” out one plant for another during the Annual Backyard Habitat Plant Swap. This year’s focus will be caterpillar host plants. Check out www.njaudubon.org/nccm for a list of caterpillar host plants then drop off your plant on April 27 and receive a voucher. Cost for the Swap is one plant and one new or used garden tool for the Center.
