Fall Is Seeding Time

By Sponsored Content

Generally speaking, cool season lawns are the primary grass type in the Cape May Court House area. When working with cool season grasses, overseeding in the fall is a general practice that should be done annually to help maintain a thick, vigorous lawn that naturally crowds out unwanted weeds.
When it comes to overseeding, be sure to review the seed’s label for the exact content of the seed. In most cases, a high quality blend of three or more varieties of the same grass type is recommended, as are blends with a very low weed content or undesirable grass types. As a reference, a recent label inspection of seed blends available at “big box” stores shows as much as 2% to be weed seed, undesirable grass types or a combination of the two! When you consider that seed bags have about 230,000 seeds per pound, a 10 pound bag that is 2% “weeds or undesirable” means that you are planting 46,000 UNWANTED WEEDS in your lawn…so remember to inspect the label before you buy!
Prior to overseeding, core aeration of the lawn will help increase seed-to-soil contact, providing better germination. In addition, core aeration helps to increase the root density of the existing lawn, improving water infiltration. In recent years, university studies have shown that annual core aeration can greatly reduce unwanted disease activity, such as Brown Patch.
