Don’t Forget about Heater Maintenance

Nobody wants to think about a heating system when it’s still warm and sunny outside, but winter is never that far away, and servicing a heating system now will ensure that the heat will click on when you want it to.
Most gas furnaces are very reliable and they’re “out-of-sight, out-of-mind.” The problem is, despite its reliability, a catastrophic failure of your furnace could occur at any time, and that failure could result in a gas leak, fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. The only way to prevent that type of disaster is with regular inspections of your heating system.
A proper inspection and tune-up is a must–every year. That’s what every furnace manufacturer recommends. A furnace check-up or tune-up is much like a visit to the doctor or taking your car to a mechanic.
However, specifically in the case of your home, a furnace check-up consists of the following steps:
• Inspect thermostat for proper operation.
• Inspect filter and change or clean as needed. Note: Dirty filters restrict air flow, reducing efficiency.
• Check all electrical components and controls.
• Oil motors as needed.
• Inspect heat exchanger for possible cracks. Note: A crack in the heat exchanger will introduce carbon monoxide.
• Check air flow.
• Inspect grills and registers.
• Inspect duct work.
• Troubleshooting any problems.
When you have your heater professionally tuned-up and safety inspection performed, you’ll not only be protecting yourself from potential hazards, you will also be increasing the efficiency of your system, improving your air quality and preventing untimely breakdowns that, at the very least, will leave you uncomfortable, and most likely will occur at the worst possible time.
