Debbie’s kitchen cabinets at her home in Upper Township were a slightly dated, bleached oak that she just wasn’t happy with. While her husband went away on a three-week trip, Debbie decided to paint the cabinets herself. But she didn’t stop there – she went on to paint the walls and ceiling, and even installed pendant lights. Afterward, Debbie and her husband had new countertops and a new sink/faucet installed. Debbie also plans on putting in a new backsplash in the near future.
The DIY part of Debbie’s kitchen upgrade took her around 42 hours to complete by herself. Debbie shares that it was exhausting but also exhilarating and totally worth it, especially since she was able to surprise her husband when he returned home from his trip. Her results were great and the DIY part of the project didn’t cost much. Here are the steps Debbie took to complete the DIY part of her kitchen upgrade:
Step 1: First, she removed all doors from the cabinets.
Step 2: Next, she cleaned and sanded all of the doors, drawers and cabinets.
Step 3: Then, she applied two coats of primer and two coats of paint to the doors, drawers and cabinets using a foam roller, sanding in between each coat.
Step 4: Once everything was dry, she reinstalled the doors onto the cabinets.
Step 5: Then, she installed new knobs and drawer pulls onto the cabinet doors and drawers.
Step 6: When the cabinets were complete, she painted the walls and ceiling.
Step 7: Then, she installed the pendant lights.
Step 8: Finally, she painted the ceiling fan with burnished bronze spray paint and added new paddles.
Total Cost: Approximately $400
