Maria Filina bought an old hutch for $50 and wanted to do something fun with it, something different than the typical natural wood look. The hutch received a complete makeover, from the coloring to the details on the cabinet doors. Since she decided to use stain for this project, sanding was necessary and a bit time consuming, but worth it in the end. The unique piece now sits in Maria’s living room at her home in North Cape May. Here are the steps she took to complete this project:
Step 1: First, Maria cleaned the hutch thoroughly using Goof Off spray to remove any old polyurethane.
Step 2: Next, she sanded the entire hutch down and wiped off the dust.
Step 3: Then, she applied her first coat of weathered gray stain to the hutch. Maria kept things interesting by leaving the top natural wood.
Step 4: While the first coat of stain dried, she started working on the cabinet doors. She removed the old inserts from the doors and applied new ones using ceiling tiles.
Step 5: She then applied a second coat of stain to the entire hutch (except the top), including over the ceiling tiles.
Step 6: Lastly, after letting the hutch dry for a few hours, she applied a couple coats of polyurethane.
Total Cost: Approximately $85 – $50 for the hutch, $20 for the ceiling tiles and $15 for the stain. Maria had the polyurethane at home already.
