COURT HOUSE – The community garden created this spring by Middle Township Recreation Program Coordinator Robert Matthews has come to fruition. Adjacent to the historic Whitesboro School, the garden has produced bountiful amounts of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, scallions and summer squash. The produce was distributed to families of those who attended the Recreation Department’s summer camp, as well as through Ms. Vera’s food pantry at the Whitesboro School.
Matthews has been managing the school in cooperation with the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, and plans are underway to utilize the historic school to provide various social services for residents in the Township. The school is rich is local history and provides space for popular educational opportunities including the popular “Homework Club.” The school continues to serve as the host location for Ms. Vera’s food closet which provides non-perishable food to families in need. Ms. Vera also runs a very successful holiday clothing and toy drive for the community.
“The results of our partnership with the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro are literally bearing fruit. We hope this is just the beginning of a successful collaboration between the Township and the CCW,” said Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue.
Donations to Ms. Vera’s food pantry may be dropped off between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Whitesboro School, 100 East Main Street, Whitesboro.
