The high temperatures we have been experiencing for the last month are causing as much damage to your deck as the brutal winter we just went experienced.
It is not a good time now to stain, paint or seal your wood decks, but it is time to prepare to do it in the fall.
Any cracked or split boards should be replaced. You should make sure all fasteners are secure and tight.
Make sure all metal connectors and hanger have not corroded. Check to make sure all railings and steps are secure and tight.
Now check to see if your wood deck needs to be sealed. Pour a cup of water on your deck. If the water beads up and roils off, your deck is still protected. If the water soaks in, it is time to seal your deck.
It is a good time now to clean your deck. You can do it by hand with soap and water and a brush or use a power washer. Be careful if you use a power washer because using the wrong setting can blast a hole thru the wood.
Washing your deck now will give it time to dry before the temperatures drop into the 70s and 80s, perfect for stain, paint or sealer.
Any good exterior sealant, stain or paint is good for making sure your deck lasts a couple more years.
Even of you have a composite or PUC deck, it is still a good idea to clean and fix your deck.
The manufacturers of those type decks call their products. “Low Maintenance” not “Maintenance Free.” Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions. Ask for Bob.
